Steps To Consider in Deciding Whether To Incorporate a New Endoscopic Technique Into Your Practice

Douglas K. Rex, MD, MASGE, reviewing Voiosu A, Dinis Ribeiro M. Gastrointest Endosc 2022 Aug 3.

This interesting opinion piece provides advice regarding a process for deciding whether to incorporate a new endoscopic technique into your practice. The authors suggest you consider whether the following 8 statements are established before making the decision:

  • There is an estimated definite need, preferably thoroughly researched and documented in advance.
  • The technique is standardized.
  • The technique represents a significant improvement to current practice.
  • The local conditions and regulations are amenable to the technique’s introduction.
  • Adequate training structures and effective oversight are available.
  • Continuity of care is assured.
  • Patient preference for the new technique is considered.
  • There is a strong personal determination to implement the technique.

COMMENT

This seems like a good series of suggestions to help work through the process of whether to take the time and assume the cost of incorporating a new technique into endoscopic practice.

Note to readers: At the time we reviewed this paper, its publisher noted that it was not in final form and that subsequent changes might be made.
