European Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy Issues Comprehensive Curriculum for Endoscopic Mucosal Resection in the Colon

Douglas K. Rex, MD, MASGE, reviewing Tate DJ, et al. Endoscopy 2023 Jun 7.

Those performing endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR) in the colorectum should be aware of this remarkably comprehensive document from the European Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy that details an enormous range of issues surrounding EMR in the colorectum. Topics covered include skills required before learning EMR, knowledge base needed to assess lesions and perform EMR, how to obtain informed consent for EMR, understanding and checking equipment including the electrosurgical unit, skills required for management of adverse events, communication issues with patients, assessment of post-EMR scars, the recommended minimum number of procedures before independent practice, and key performance indicators.

COMMENT

Just reading this document will be very instructive to EMR trainees. It’s also an exhaustive and detailed outline of EMR training, from what trainees need to learn before beginning training to a detailed review of how to perform EMR, establish an EMR unit, and assess competency during and after training.

Note to readers: At the time we reviewed this paper, its publisher noted that it was not in final form and that subsequent changes might be made.
