Video-Based Feedback Improves Cold Snare Polypectomy Among Fellows but Learning Curve Is Long

Video-Based Feedback Improves Cold Snare Polypectomy Among Fellows but Learning Curve Is Long

Douglas K. Rex, MD, MASGE, reviewing Kaltenbach T, et al. Am J Gastroenterol. 2023 Jun 13.

Cold snare polypectomy (CSP) is the preferred resection method for colorectal lesions ≤10 mm. Competence in CSP can be assessed using the CSPAT (Cold Snare Polypectomy Assessment Tool).

In this study, 22 trainees were randomized to receive video feedback on their CSP technique versus conventional intraprocedural feedback from the attending physician. After a mean of 135 polyps per trainee, only two trainees in the video feedback group achieved competence, and none in the conventional feedback group demonstrated competence in CSP. Competent polypectomy increased by 3% per block of 20 resections in the video-feedback group.

COMMENT

These data indicate that acquiring competent CSP technique is a relatively slow process, suggesting better methods of improving CSP skills are needed.
