Photodocumentation of Large Colorectal Polyps Is Suboptimal

Douglas K. Rex, MD, MASGE, reviewing Khan AA, et al. Gastrointest Endosc 2023 Jun 23.

The U.S. Multi-Society Task Force on Colorectal Cancer recommends that polyps ≥1 cm be photographed before resection to document size and the resection site photographed after the procedure.

In an evaluation of 25 endoscopists who removed 1693 large polyps—at least 50 per endoscopist—photodocumentation was performed in 82% of polyps before resection and 52% after resection. Colorectal surgeons were 88% less likely to obtain pre-resection photos, and multiple polyps and longer withdrawal time also predicted a lower likelihood of photodocumentation.

COMMENT

Preprocedure photo documentation of large polyps is particularly important to document the rationale for shorter postpolypectomy surveillance intervals.
